Normally, when I am checking out local shops, I’m having to bounce all around a town or city. Heck, the home base in Indy has stores in every blasted corner of the city, including right smack dab in the middle of town. It’s very rare to find an area where the stores are not only close, but work together, but this is what Kokomo has, with their “Geek Street.”
Geek Street is a section on the 100 block of Sycamore in downtown Kokomo, which is home to a group of stores that are definitely of interest to readers of this blog. You see, it’s called Geek Street, because it’s home to a comic book shop, a gaming store, a toy store, as well as a record store! It is very easy to spend almost an entire day looking through action figures, digging through vinyl, and digging through back issues in this Hoosier treasure, and I should know, because I’ve done it a few times!
Now, I know FLS Friday is traditionally just about a single store, and two of these stores have appeared previously on the blog. However, this is such a unique set-up, I want to make sure everyone knows about it! So, what can you find on Geek Street in Kokomo?
I’ve written about Comics Cubed on here before, and I have a love for this little shop. The owner, Shawn Hilton, runs a friendly and welcoming shop that doesn’t just sell books, but also builds community. Shawn also runs KokomoCon every year, which helps the community Geek out together, and he also donates books to local reading programs and school comic clubs. Shawn and his staff are always ready with a recommendation, based on what you enjoy reading, and are always happy to talk comics. You can find more information about this shop on my FLS Friday blog post that might be a bit old, but is still very true.
Kokomo Toys and Collectibles
Another location that I’ve written about on the blog. Todd Jordan has built up a fantastic shop, with one of the best toy collections I’ve seen not just in my travels around Indiana, but also back when I was doing this in Southern California! The shop carries toys from the sixties to now, and they have just a ton! From the popular Funko Pop line, to a lot of toys from the eighties and nineties, it is a great place to go to relive your childhood, and find pieces to recapture it, as well! In addition, they also have prototypes and promotional items for the hardcore collector, plus life-sized display pieces that help make this location a must-see! Once again, the info on this FLS Friday blog post might be a bit old, but it’s very true and accurate.
American Dream Hi-Fi
A lot of Geeks I know enjoy vinyl. This is another location I’m not as familiar with, especially since I haven’t had a working record player since 1998, but I have stopped in, and looked around a bit, and the folks working there were friendly, and they had a decent amount of records, so I have no problem telling you to check it out. You can get more information on their Facebook Page.
Once again, Kokomo has a great Geek thing happening with Geek Street, so I really encourage you to head there and check it out! I’ll see you in two weeks, with a new shop!
