Back in the beginning of February, I talked about a little thing that Bub’s Burgers & Ice Cream was doing, called the “Tour de Fat.” (Link) This challenge involved visiting every week for twelve weeks, and trying a new hamburger, and at the end, everyone who completed their punch card got a t-shirt, and a chance to win a smoker. I’ve been posting updates on Tuesday Tidbits, with a listing of all of the burger’s places, but it was incomplete until now. On Thursday, 40 days before I turn 40, I stopped in, completed the challenge, received my t-shirt, and reflected on a lot of money spent on meat.
At the beginning, I was joined by my buddy Mike, and occasionally Lizz, but at the back stretch, I was flying solo. I exclusively visited the Bub’s Burgers in Zionsville, because in all honesty, it’s two miles from Ye Olde Place of Employment. First and foremost, I want to touch on the service, because if you’re visiting someplace every week for this length of time, you’re hoping the service will at least be passable. I tell ya, this crew is awesome. I went in at times the place was packed, I went in once where I was the only customer in the joint, and each time, I had fantastic service. So Bub’s, if you read this for some reason, kudos to your crew at the Zionsville location! Now, on to the tasty sammiches…
First, let’s talk about my favorites. While I’m not a “foodie” or a food reviewer, I know what I like, and I know that I place something that’s unique and tasty over something I can get anywhere else. With this in mind, the top was definitely the Bacon & Cheddar Stuffed Cheeseburger! I’m always a sucker for a burger with tasty stuff shoved inside of it, especially when that tasty stuff involves bacon, with more bacon on top, so there was the number one spot. The Reuben Burger pulled in the number two spot, because I have come to enjoy a decent Reuben, and it was the sandwich that pulled me into this, and kept me after the first week. Rounding out the top three was the entry for the second to last week, the Hot & Spicy Burger. I love spicy things, though my body loves reminding me that I’m starting to get too old for these things. However, the taste of the burger made up for any gastrointestinal distress I might have experienced later! Mostly everything else on the list was very tasty, but there were a few disappointments.
Ten of the available burgers were wonderful, and did not disappoint. However, there were two offerings that just did not live up to this, in my mind. First up, is Week Five’s Taco Burger, Pulling in spot 11 out of 12 on the list, it was just okay. It looks good, with shredded lettuce, sour cream, cheese, tomato, and more, it just didn’t scream “taco”. It was missing something, like salsa, pico de gallo, or even guacamole. It just tasted like a standard hamburger, which at this place isn’t necessarily a bad thing, but when told it is a Taco Burger? Makes you a bit disappointed. However, the biggest disappointment of the twelve weeks was Week Eight’s German Dog. First off, the challenge promised, and I quote, “Each week through April 16th, we will offer a unique, delicious Specialty Burger”, of which a hot dog is not. Second, it was a hot dog with sauerkraut and brown mustard. I’m sorry, I can go to King David’s at the airport and get something more imaginative, that is just as tasty, if not even tastier. I’m sorry, this was a major disappointment, and was the weakest point in the event.
When all was said and done, though, I got eleven solid hamburgers (I count the sliders as one), and a long sleeve t-shirt. I am also in the running for a smoker, but I’m not banking on that. This was all just stupid fun, for some good burgers and a t-shirt. Huge props to Bub’s Burgers for eleven great burger choices, and a nifty shirt! Next week’s Tuesday Tidbits will have the final countdown, but here is a photo listing off all twelve offerings, in order of release!
Have a great weekend!
