I used to be a toy collector. I had so many Star Trek figures from Playmates and Power of the Force Star Wars figures, all on the card, it wasn’t even funny. However, as I’ve grown older, I’ve become a bit more selective. Small action figures don’t really do it for me, any more, for example. Heck, many of the large action figures don’t do it for me, though they look really cool. I’m not a completionist, and I instead just buy items I think look interesting. I have a smattering of Funko Pops, I have a few Star Wars ships from Hot Wheels, and I’m almost always on the hunt for inexpensive starships from Star Wars. Even though I’m no longer really into collecting, I’m always interested to see what comes out at the New York Toy Fair.
This past week was the 2017 Toy Fair, and while there wasn’t a ton I was interested in, there were still some cool things announced, especially for the 40th Anniversary of Star Wars. As I was looking through all the different websites at some of the stuff I liked, I figured some of you might be interested as well. Not an affiliate link to be seen, here, but all links will be to different websites for writers who aren’t small and regional, and were able to actually attend Toy Fair, and who I’m living vicariously through.
So, what am I psyched about?
Well, first there’s the Star Wars toys. First and foremost is the newest addition to the Black Series line of helmets, which will be a replica of Poe Dameron’s helmet from The Force Awakens and (I assume) The Last Jedi! I first saw this shared by a friend on Facebook, where they linked an article from Comic Book dot Com. io9 did an article on it, lamenting the fact it was a toy, and then updated to let us know that it should fit adults. While the fit for a large headed gentleman still remains to be seen, one of these will be mine! Speaking of Black Series toys, did you see what they’re doing for the 40th anniversary, with the “Early Bird” recreation using Black Series figures (check out this Star Wars dot Com article)? While that is cool, I’m really excited for the GameStop exclusive R5-D4. This is (for some reason) one of my favorite droids from the original trilogy, and this Action Figure Insider article has some sweet pics of this upcoming toy. Finally, speaking of droids, does anyone remember last year’s Toy Fair, when Spinmaster showed off an almost life-size BB-8 that worked with a remote control, and had a “follow me” function to it? Guess what’s been tweaked, and is back this year, with a (according to this io9 article) $230 price tag? Yeah, Tony needs one of these. Tony needs one of these so bad, that Tony is referring to himself in third-person, and is not going back to edit it out.
Next up is something cool from DC and Warner Brothers. While I’m not a huge fan of what DC is doing with their movies, I do kinda like the latest incarnation of the Batmobile. This fall, the “Justice League Ultimate Batmobile” will be released (yes, another io9 article, but I like their pictures!), which features smoking exhaust pipes, a moving Batman figure in the driver’s seat, moving guns, and is controlled by your smartphone. While this seems like a bummer, it’s because there is a camera in the driver’s compartment that steams live-video to your phone, so you can see what the Batmobile sees! SWEET!
Finally, I’m psyched about the newest additions to the Marvel Legend’s “Role-Playing” line. This past year, they release a decent looking Iron Man helmet, along with a Captain America shield, that cost around $100 and look surprisingly good for toys. At this year’s show, they had Thor’s hammer,
MewMew Mjolnir, with sound effects and light-up runes, which looks cool. However, the piece I’m focusing on is Star Lord’s helmet! It’s supposed to be able to fit most adult heads, has light up eyes, and according to one article I read (which I can’t find, ‘natch) it has bluetooth connectivity for you to stream your awesome mixes through. You can find the information on these at this Inside the Magic article!
If you Internet at all, you can find a lot of cool pics from this year’s show on the internet. However, since I wasn’t there, I have none. So, today’s picture is just a picture of my Fallout toys, since there seemed to be nothing new at Toy Fair this year.
So, what did you see pictures of that you’re psyched about? Give me a shout in the comments!
