As some of you may know, I am originally from Henry County. I was born in New Castle, lived on South Main until ’86 when we moved to a house in the country, near Shirley, and I transferred to the Shenandoah School System. My FLGS when I was playing M:TG was Phrog’s Phantasy Phactory in New Castle, I bought my first set of dice years before that from a short-lived (to my memory) comic and game shop on Broad St, and I spent a lot of time at the library.
The New Castle-Henry County Public Library was where I could go, and get caught up on the huge amount of Star Trek books that were already out when I was getting into it in high school. It was where I could read comic books. It was where I could meet fellow Trekkies and Geeks in small conventions, held in the basement. It’s memories such as these that bring me back to their yearly convention for their teen reading program, TeenCon.
In its third year, TeenCon was started by Krystal Stanich to promote the summer reading program. The first year was in the parking lot, where they were blessed with good weather (though I did end up with a circular fez tan from standing in the sun all day). The second year was moved into the auditorium, and this is where they are located this third year. TeenCon brings the pop-culture convention experience to the library, with vendors (like Hometown Comics), authors (like Hans Cummings), artists, panels, and a costume contest. It is not a large show, by any stretch of the imagination, because it is not a large library! However, the folks that attend bring some great costumes, a great energy, and the library does a really great job putting together something fun for the community.
As I said, I’ve attended the last two years, and I will be there this year. I’ll have a similar table set-up to what I had at Indy PopCon last weekend, with the pins and the fidget spinners and all of that. I’ll also be available to anyone who wants to talk about blogging, or podcasting, or even social media, since libraries are for learning!
