Normally, as I write about shops, I’m writing about a place where a Geek can pick up comic books, games, hobby supplies, or any combination of those. It’s not often that I write about a book store, and it’s even less often that I write about a brewery. However, I know that not only do I like good beer and books, I know many of my Geek brethren around Indianapolis enjoy such things, as well. Plus, I also know many of my blogging brethren have already written about this place, but I have to put in my two cents as well, along with making sure it’s on my list when people come to my website looking for places around Indiana to get their Geek on.
Books & Brews is located in a small strip mall off of 96th Street and I-69 on the NE side of Indianapolis. It’s on the west side of I-69, and the south side of 96th Street, behind the Aldis and Goodwill, but before the Home Depot. They have small signs pointing the way if you need help, and it’s well worth the search, as the stark look of the shopping center/office row is hiding a real gem on this side of town that makes me regret moving away from my old apartment that was an easy bicycle ride away.
In the front is a small bookstore, with a section for kids, tables for discussion, and a good open feel. The book shelves aren’t real tall, probably about three and a half feet tall to my eye (I don’t do sizes real well, FYI). They are full of books, including a section for local creators near the entrance to the tap room. I honestly have not had much of a chance to browse through their books, but one astounding thing is how they’ve worked out a partnership with Indy Reads in order to donate 10% of the proceeds from every used book sale to help promote literacy in Central Indiana. You can also exchange your books for credit that works in both the book store and the brewery. Exchange rates are on their website, under the “Books” section.
Walk into the back of the store, and that is where the magic happens. This is the home of what they call the best grilled cheese in Indianapolis, and a bevy of book-branded brews. First, we shall touch on the food. Breads from Amelia’s Bakery. Meats from Smoking Goose. Chips from Broad Ripple Chip Company. The joint is bursting with local flavor. I personally have tried the “Frankenstein” plate of meat and cheese, because I’m just a meat and cheese guy! It was very tasty! Yeah, I know, I’m not a food writer. I have heard good things about their sandwiches, as well, which leads me to believe their claims about their grilled cheese! Beers are mostly brewed on site, with the occasional local craft beer served as well. Their beer list contains brews with names like:
- Toil and Trouble Dark English Ale
- Brave New Brew Pale Ale
- Clifford the “Lil” Red Ale
- Smaug Grog Red IPA
- Charlie and the Chocolate Milk Stout (tapped TONIGHT, 5/23/2014)
