For many people, this weekend is a weekend of traditions. On Thursday, many of my readers will get together with family and friends to eat and watch football. Then, on Friday, a good portion of them will go out, brave the traffic, and head to the Wyndham West hotel for Starbase Indy! What is Starbase Indy, you may ask? Well, might I point you to this podcast episode? It’s a fun conversation. I’ll wait.
Caught up? Great! Now, why should you go this weekend?
First, for the classic convention experience, they have some great guests. John Billingsley and Bonita Friedericy are favorites for Starbase, and they’ll be back! I’ve heard great things from Klingon friends about Robert O’Reilly at these shows, and of course, if you’re having a Klingon in attendance, you’ll need Marc Okrand to help translate! In addition, they will be having astronaut David Wolf, Nerdist’s Chief Science Officer Kyle Hill, and more! If that isn’t enough, this is also a great place to check out the local band Five Year Mission, whose music you hear opening up almost every recent episode of the Indiana Geeking Podcast! Of course, like every other convention, as well, there is going to be a dealer’s room, but this one is not going to be chock full of Funko Pop figures! Instead, there’s going to be a lot of local creators and sellers, there to help you get a jump on your holiday shopping! Personally, might I recommend tracking down Troy and picking up a copy of his newest book, How to Raise Viking Children and Other Tales of Woe? I give this a strong recommendation. Tell him I sent you!
However, Starbase Indy isn’t just a science fiction convention, it’s a science convention. As was stated on the podcast, there’s going to be a lot of STEM activities at the show as well, such as (borrowed from the SBI Facebook), the ability to “extract fruit DNA, learn how to brew your own beer,… try a full body Virtual Reality rig, learn how to build your own solar panel array” and more. I’m really looking forward to checking out the VR, provided by IU and the baby of Chauncy Frend, learning about the Science of Distilling, and wishing I could check out other panels as I’m running my own.
For myself, Lizz and I will be there all weekend, having ponied up for the three day badges. We are putting our game plan together this evening, using the planner found here, and I’m starting to realize there’s almost too much to do! For example, on Saturday at 1PM, I’m planning on checking out the “Holodeck 2017” panel about VR, but there’s also a cool panel on solar (no pun intended) that I would also like to see. Then, at 3PM, while I’m leading a discussion panel on The Orville with Carl from Indy Pop Con, Five Year Mission is doing a panel about their Year Four album that I would love to attend, and the Klingons are doing a panel on Translating Popular Music Into Klingon! Dang it! Curse you, Starbase, for having too much awesome things happening! Seriously, and I haven’t even had a chance to look into times for the puzzle room or the Live Action Role Playing, or…
There is so much going on, and this is a great way to escape from the holiday madness. Starbase Indy is really turning themselves into something unique this year, and I’m really excited to check it out, and hopefully help them to succeed. You should be going too! Here’s what you need to know:
