Alright, now its been three weeks since I talked about Doctor Who: Blood of the Daleks. The problem is, I can’t really take part two and turn it into a full article. It can seriously be summed up into many DW episodes: The Doctor beats the Daleks. However, while listening to part two and deciding not to write about it, I made a connection: Hayley Atwell voices a character in the audio-books. Who else is Hayley Atwell known for playing? Well, Agent Carter of course!
Nice segue. That’s a self-high-five right there.
Anyway, back to Agent Carter. Season One of the Agents of SHIELD/Marvel-movie-universe prequel aired last year, and it was… ok. Much like the previously mentioned SHIELD, it started off really slow and not too interesting, but picked up significantly towards the end of the season. The last few episodes were enough to convince me to check out season two. And I have to say; this season is already starting off WAY better.
Season 2 started off with a two-hour premiere, which was just the first two episodes put together into one block. The two episodes start off with Peggy Carter being shipped off to Los Angeles to work for last season’s love interest, Daniel Sousa. A woman’s body is found in a frozen lake, in the middle of summer. This sparks a whole conspiracy involving a shady science lab, a corrupt soon-to-be senator, and dark matter. In my opinion, this is already WAY more interesting than season one.
I absolutely love the new LA setting. The footage used during scene transitions is awesome, but I can’t tell if its really footage of 1940s LA or new footage made to look old. Either way, I love it. The set and costume design are outstanding, and they do a really nice job of making you feel like it’s actually the 1940s. James D’Arcy returns as the ever-lovable Edwin Jarvis, who is just as lovable this season, if not more. New characters, such as Wynn Everett’s evil-scientist-turned-actress Whitney Frost and Reggie Austin’s good-scientist-turned-good Jason Wilkes, bring a whole new depth to the show, Wilkes in particular bringing a whole new conflict with racial biases of the 40s. Atwell herself is still just as great as she was in Captain America, making Peggy Carter relatable yet still way cooler than you.
There have only been a few episodes this season, but I can already tell this season is shaping up to be much better than the last. From the new Los Angeles setting, to the new and interesting characters, to the scary and very sci-fi Dark Matter, everything about this season screams “THIS IS WHAT WE WANTED SEASON ONE TO BE”. I recommend any and all Marvel fans should check the show out, at least this season. If you want, you can find the first Season available to buy or stream on Amazon (if you don’t mind, use this Link!).
I’ll see you all next week, with an article about subject-yet-to-be-decided! See you then, folks.
