Oh, DC. I will openly admit that I like your comics better than Marvel’s. You’re rocking cable television on the CW. I honestly like your characters more than any other comic company. However, when it comes to movies, Marvel is CRUSHING you. Even though I think Marvel movies are starting to get stale, they still work so much better than your movies. I will defend B.v.S. with all of my heart, but I know that it had many faults. I was sincerely looking forward to Suicide Squad, hoping and praying that you could finally release movies on par with Marvel. Did you? Was Suicide Squad a success?
As you all may find on the internet, it depends on who you ask. Personally, I really enjoyed the movie. I thought it was a fun, Guardians Of The Galaxy-esque romp through some of the quirkier characters that DC offers. It was definitely a much needed break in terms of tone, as the humor was a-flying. However, I do have to admit: it was not a good movie.
Suicide Squad revolves around a team of villains who are basically blackmailed into doing good. I won’t spoil anything, but I will say that the plot wasn’t very strong. It really seemed like they had a hard time finding a good story for these characters so early on in the DCCU. That’s not to say that the plot was bad; I enjoyed the flashback style introductions for many of the characters, which gave a quick glimpse into their past without too much focus on it. The main villain was pretty awesome in my opinion, but I honestly thought that the villain threw some holes into the plot. While I could go on and on about things that I thought could use work, I would much rather talk about my favorite part of the movie: the characters!
Now, I’m not really going to talk about the actor’s performances, because let’s be honest: no one expected any Oscar worthy acting in this film. It was the DC characters themselves that really stole the show for me. Deadshot was super sweet, and a scene where he bounced bullets off the walls of a building was really cool. He had some scenes with Batman that I really enjoyed. However, it often felt like he was Will Smith more than Deadshot. I even liked Harley Quinn, who had more depth than I was expecting, even though I thought she would be cooler with pants on. I really enjoyed Leto’s Joker, but as everyone knows by now, he was not in the movie enough. My two favorite characters had to be Captain Boomerang and El Diablo. Boomerang was hilarious, and paved the way for an awesome cameo early on that I was not expecting. El Diablo, who I had never even heard of before, ended up being this super intense and insanely powerful metahuman. Once he started unleashing his full power, he was the absolute coolest.
Suicide Squad is rated PG-13, and features lots and lots of violence and a few swears. While definitely not as strong as a Marvel movie, I think it was a fun romp into the realm of some more quirky and obscure DC characters. I recommend this movie to people who want to have fun, but don’t want to necessarily see a great film. While critics panned it, the movie is still going strong in theaters, and lots of fans seem to really like it. I hope this movie can pave the way for DC to put out more successful and exciting films. Baby steps though.
Baby steps.
