*DISCLAIMER: I APOLOGIZE IN ADVANCE FOR THIS BEING SHORT. I WOULD LOVE TO WRITE A LONG REVIEW FOR THIS MOVIE, BUT SOMETIMES COLLEGE WON’T LET ME DO THAT*
Just so you all know, I really hate when I do this. I hate promising to finish up a two-part article, but writing about something else in between. I wouldn’t do it, if not for necessity. To write about the last few episodes of Daredevil Season Two would require me to actually watch the rest of the episodes, which I did not have time to do. However, I was able to see one new movie over the weekend, so I might as well write about that. What did I think about Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice?
I actually liked it. It helped me realize that I have a hard time disliking movies. After seeing all of the negative reviews, I expected to go in and hate the film, but I really didn’t. It was different, and I liked that.
As anyone at all could guess, the movie centers around Batman and Superman having a confrontation. Lex Luthor is doing evil stuff, so the two heroes eventually team up to fight crime. Oh, and Wonder Woman shows up too.
To be completely honest, I felt like the story was severely lacking. It took way too long to get a grip on where it wanted to go, and by the end it all felt like there was too much going on. Luthor’s plot took a very long time to begin, and the actual confrontation between Bats and Supes didn’t even happen until the second half. Several lines of dialogue felt silly and uninspired, while others actually felt profound and meaningful. Oh, and minor spoiler: the reason Bats and Supes stop fighting is SUUUUUUUPER LAME.
I believe that the movie succeed in two major places: visual effects, and casting. I can’t say much about the effects, other than that they were really cool for the most part. They definitely brought about some of the coolest moments. But I was really really happy with the casting. Ben Affleck, in my humble opinion, was exceptional as Bruce Wayne. There was depth to his performance that showed true emotion in the character. Jeremy Irons was hilarious as Alfred, and I enjoyed Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman. I was happy that she looked and sounded Greek this time around, instead of being an American Greek demi-god. I even liked Jesse Eisenberg as Luthor, but at the same time I didn’t. Eisenberg’s performance was great; you could tell he was bringing his all to the role, and seemed to be having a great time. However, he was not a good Lex Luthor. The character seemed to trail off drastically from his comic book counterpart. Normally, I am okay with changing stuff from the comics, but with this they truly changed the heart of the character.
Overall, I enjoyed the film. However, I can admit that it wasn’t the best film. Heck, it probably isn’t even a good film. But I enjoyed watching the movie, and that’s all that really matters to me. I will recommend everyone go see this film, but go in with no expectations. This story is not all comic accurate, so be prepared for change.
I promise to watch Daredevil by next week. Pinky swear.
