I know, I know. I promised one thing, and now I’m giving you something else. This is just too important to me to put off! Ever since it was first announced, I have been looking forward to DC’s Legends of Tomorrow. I love both The Flash and Arrow, so I immediately had high hopes for the show. And now that I’ve finally gotten around to watching the pilot, I can finally say it: I loved it! This is WAY more important than some Doctor Who Audio-Book (Note: I have listened to “Blood of the Daleks Part 2”, so I promise I’ll write about it next week)!
Legends of Tomorrow is DC TV’s team-up show, using several side characters from both Arrow and The Flash and bringing them together as a team. The show stars Arthur Darvill as Rip Hunter, a suave time-travelling “Time Master” who is hell bent on destroying the legendary villain Vandal Savage once and for all. Rip Hunter goes back in time to the year 2016 to gather a team of 8 heroes and villains that can help him destroy Savage: Ray Palmer, also known as The Atom; Sarah Lance, now returned to life as the White Canary; both halves of Firestorm, the criminal duo of Captain Cold and Heatwave, and the recently introduced Hawkman and Hawkgirl. Fans of DC comics should love this show, as it features many side characters from comic history, and it plans to feature more in the show’s future, such as Jonah Hex.
I really enjoyed this first episode. I am a huge fan of both Arrow and The Flash, so this show was right up my alley. All three shows are created by the same team, so it really isn’t hard to enjoy Legends if you like the other two. The show is very science fiction oriented, using time travel as the central concept. Rip Hunter has a very strong Doctor Who vibe to him, and it’s awesome to finally see Arthur Darvill take up the lead hero position, after spending so long as second fiddle Rory Williams alongside Eleventh Doctor Matt Smith. The pilot took the team back to the 1970’s, and hilarity ensued as Canary, Cold, and Heatwave went off and started a bar fight. The characters have almost all interacted on the other two CW DC shows, so the chemistry is there and makes it more enjoyable to watch. The show took hold almost immediately, jumping straight into the action. It didn’t spend an abundance of time setting up backstory, instead deciding to drop us right into the gathering of the team. With the team-up style being the focus of the show, I’m really hoping some other characters who have appeared on Flash or Arrow can make a return, such as Wildcat or Constantine. I’m very excited to see what other kinds of obscure DC characters they can use on this show. Maybe an appearance by Etrigan the Demon, or Adam Strange? Hey, a boy can dream.
Personally, I cannot wait for more episodes of Legends of Tomorrow. The fast paced action and sci-fi setting drew me in almost immediately, and I’m a sucker for time travel. The cast had great chemistry, and the fact that it blends perfectly with the feel of the other CW shows is a plus. I highly recommend this show to any fans of DC comics, and fans of the CW’s other DC themed shows. You can all expect to find me watching new episodes either immediately as they air, or a few days after. Either way, this show quickly took a spot at the top of my list of weekly must-watch shows.
Next week, I’ll finish up talking about those Doctor Who Audio-Books, and hopefully I’ll find something interesting to write about after that!
I don’t say this nearly enough, but a huge thank you goes out to anyone and everyone who takes the time to read these every week. It really means a lot to me that I’ve been given an opportunity to write for an actual audience. Thanks again Tony for taking me on!
