I got to do a really fun thing. I got to read a copy of Gotham Academy #4 (out today!) that we were sent for review purposes. And now I get to do another fun thing: tell you why you should read this book.

Gotham Academy #4 cover

Fun fact: clicking this picture grants you the power to buy this comic!

For those who are unfamiliar, Gotham Academy (written by Becky Cloonan and Brenden Fletcher, art by Karl Kerschl) takes place at an oh-so-prestigious Gotham boarding school where there is definitely something weird going on. There might be a ghost. There are weird symbols everywhere. There are noises coming from inside the walls. Though, on the plus side, some days there’s a waffle bar at lunch.

I’d risk a haunting for waffles.

The book centers on academy second year Olive Silverlock, who had something terrible happen over the summer. No one – including Olive – knows what, but everyone can tell something’s off. And right behind her, grappling hook in hand, is Maps Mizoguchi. Maps is the high-energy, RPG-loving, completely indomitable, mega-nerd little sister of Olive’s (ex)(sort-of)(whenever she finally tells him)boyfriend. Maps is also The Best.

If you haven’t read this book yet, you really should. It’s nominally a bat-book, obviously, but it’s not linked in to the stories of the other bat-books. Bruce Wayne has made a couple of appearances, Batman has been alluded to, but this is Olive’s story. Even if this is your only DC book, you’ll be fine. The book is young-person appropriate at least down to young teens, but it’s a great book for adults as well.

It’s four issues in, so you can easily pick up from the beginning (which is my vote), but you can also start with #4. The first three issues do a lot of great work establishing who the characters are, and how they relate to each other. #4 seems prepared to launch us into one of the central mysteries of Gotham Academy: what happened to Olive Silverlock’s mom?

So go buy this book! Then, submit to the Gotham Academy tumblr for a chance to win a sketch from one of the creators. Let me making a stupid face while holding issues #1-3 serve as an inspiration:

Books I’m Picking Up This Week:

Bitch Planet #2
Gotham Academy #4
Secret Avengers #12
Sex Criminals #10
Thor #4
Uncanny X-Men #30

Getting to read our review copy of Gotham Academy #4 was awesome, but I’m still going to buy a copy this week. Partially because I want the support the things I love. Partially because I like to stay consistent about format because otherwise I’d be in the middle of a re-read and have to switch from floppies to a laptop and back. Like some sort of… future-person? Time-traveler? Wizard, maybe?

Didn’t really plan a way out of that analogy.

Track your list pulllist.comixology.com! Pick them up the where I get mine at Downtown Comics! Find some other place to get them using Comic Shop Locator! Or get them without changing out of PJs using Comixology!

This digital copy of Gotham Academy was provided to Geeking in Indiana for us to review. We didn’t get any compensation, and all opinions provided here are 100% honest. None of other stuff I link to is paying me/giving me stuff either. They are, however, totally welcome to. Just putting that out there.

About Bri Rudd

Bri Rudd wishes she’d become either a drummer or an intrepid girl detective. Instead, she makes comics at brirudd.com (which is currently brirudd.tumblr.com in disguise), and reminisces about D2 as @OhNoBri. She thinks about nacho cheese more than is strictly respectable.
