So there’s this Kickstarter. It’s about a princess. She’s a tiny little rocker girl who has a pet snake. She’s everything I want to be, except she’s about 8-years-old.
The Princess Who Saved Herself is a children’s book based on a Jonathan Coulton song of the same name. It’s written by Greg Pak, with art by Takeshi Miyazawa, colors by Jessica Kholinne, and letters by Simon Bowland. It’s also done. In fact, there may be people reading this that already have it.
For those people, kindly disregard the brief flash of jealousy in my eyes. It’s fine. I’m soooo happy for you. Mean it. Promise.
For those who don’t have it and don’t know anything about it, I’m here to drop knowledge.
See, before there was this Kickstarter, there was this other Kickstarter. Tony wrote about it here. The short version is that Greg Pak – along with the creative team listed above – was looking to fund a graphic novel called Code Monkey Save the World, with characters/concept based on Jonathan Coulton songs. A digital download of a Princess Who Saved Herself picture book was one of the stretch goals. So they made the goal, made the comic, make the book, then launched this Kickstarter to fund physical copies of The Princess Who Saved Herself. They launched the Kickstarter last Wednesday morning, and they’d made their goal before the end of the day. Which is great, because I need this book. She’s a girl who, left to her own devices, eats an ENTIRE CAKE. I can respect that.
Also, she’s kind, and caring, and not afraid to stand up for herself. But mostly the cake thing.
It looks to be a really fun story about a little girl who’s indomitable, and I’m always in favor of more books like that. The art is adorable, the colors are gorgeous, and her snake has a hat.
This is a selling point to me. I assume you all agree. Snakes in hats, right? Snakes in hats.
If you haven’t heard to the song the book based, you should check it out. I first heard it a week ago, and it’s already made its way into my “I Run This” mix. Which is basically this, dropped in amongst a lot of Beyoncé and Nicki Minaj. The transition can be jarring, but it works.
And while we’re talking Kickstarters, there’s another one you should check out: Sfé Monster and Taneka Stotts launched the Beyond Anthology Kickstarter this week. It’s a queer sci-fi/fantasy comic anthology, and it’s got a great slate of creators, and it’s all-ages. Like PWSH, Beyond is already done. They’re looking to pay everybody, and cover their printing costs.
Alright. Now you have two cool things you can support, and I’ve typed “Kickstarter” enough times that 1) it’s lost all meaning and 2) the malevolent spirit of Kicke Starte is going to climb out of my bathroom mirror to seek vengeance of those that didn’t believe his prototypes would succeed on the open market.

Honesty time: I wrote that dumb joke and for SPLIT SECOND my mind pondered the possibility that it could happen, so BRB have to look all my doors and cower.
